Parents : The 24/7/365 people
A few things I have learnt in the past 21 years...
1. As a parent you are the nearest thing to an 'expert' on your child. There's nobody else 'out there' with a magic wand.
2. It's ok to be just doing ok. Kick the guilt into the long grass; nobody gets it right all the time.
3. Be an OWL - Observe, Wait, Listen . And learn from your child.
4. Be a Columbo - detect your child's strengths, interests, and things that make them happy. Grab hold of these things and nurture them and run with them - and don't let other people's agendas matter more than them.
5. Don't expend too much time and energy fighting 'systems'; energy that would be better expended directly on your child.
6. Make progress at the margin of their current comfort zone. Take small steps towards another plateau. On bad days ditch the agenda completely and stay in the middle of the existing comfort zone.
7. Give time time to work. Have a 25 year education time horizon in mind.
8. Get long-term holistic goals in place and stay dogged and focused.
